“Brush it off! “

“Push through!”

This world is constantly commanding us to not feel and stay busy; therefore, forcing us out of the present.  Yoga on the other hand encourages quite the opposite.  For most people it enables us to slow down, and to stay in our bodies opposed to consistently being sucked out of it via distractions (i.e. work, television, worry…).  I like what T.K.V Desikachar mentions in his book,  “The Heart of Yoga,” the idea of there being one rule regarding rest:  Take when needed.  This is such a wonderfully simplistic piece of wisdom, and a philosophy yoga embodies.  This yoga sequence below by Colleen Saidman incorporates many twists allowing you to let go of tensions brought on by this world both physically AND emotionally.  Enjoy J

This week the we had our first substantial snow fall of the season, and, although beautiful, the change of weather can sometimes bring sinus pressure, the infamous runny nose, and “I’m so uncomfortable I can’t sleep” scratchy throat.  What to do?  Yoga!  This open heart sequence from Ekhart Yoga is wonderful for relieving any irritating congestion in the upper body.

Yoga is not about perfection.  That being said, it is also not about being blissfully ignorant and throwing your body into a pose it simply isn’t ready for.  It’s important to use wisdom when practicing asanas, and with wisdom learning the proper alignment for poses in our daily practice.  In this video below, Kathryn Budig breaks down Navasana.  This is a pose I had the priveledge of teaching over a week ago, so if interested in learning more modifications for boat pose leave a comment or head over to my contact page J

Make Yin Yoga a part of your regular yoga practice.  Here is a great video to get you started:

Alignment is key when practicing asanas.  So many of us want fast results from exercise, and are too impatient to learn the correct form in the yoga poses.  This often causes injury; therefore, slowing down your progress!  It’s a lose lose.   Watch this video from Kathryn Budig for some great tips on correcting commonly misaligned postures:

In need a good deep sleep?  Who isn’t?  Try this yoga sequence featuring the lovely Tara Stiles: http://youtu.be/bk71G6dXemc.  It’s a ten minute flow making it easy for anyone to incorporate it into their before bed routine.   You can also see more from Tara here.

I love my collection of yoga DVD’s, and have only good things to say regarding the teachers featured on them.  However, from time to time I like to “spice things up” and I will search for a new yoga flow on YouTube.  I’m so glad I did about a month ago, for I was introduced to Sadie Nardini.  She has now become someone I go to confidently knowing I will finish the workout feeling accomplished.  Make sure to check her out here: http://youtu.be/qlighuHDcP0, and follow her on twitter @sadienardini.

Only have twenty minutes to spare in your busy day?  Of course you do…we all do!  Why not invest that time into your health, and commit those twenty minutes to physical activity.  Gwen Lawrence’s DVD, “Fit Body Yoga,” makes it easy with having three separate segments (each roughly twenty minutes long) targeting different muscle groups.  Gwen is easy to follow, and gives alternative positions for all you new yogis out there.  Here is a sample: http://www.hulu.com/watch/300203

I have to give her "props."  (Yes, cheesy pun intended).  Erin Motz is my new yoga crush.  Over a month ago I came across her thirty day yoga challenge, and it was refreshing AND original.
